Lovely piece. Yes, phone calls are intimate and (for me) the best way of connecting. The generations that don't make and answer calls are missing out. However, I suppose that in times past, when letter writing was an art and penmanship was beautiful, the demise of letters was also experienced as a significant loss. As technology advances, we seem to have lost our sense of self-expression and intimacy.
I was going to write a similar thing, in that from our first meeting to the second my (ex-) wife and I spent 7 months letter writing, and all but a few of the latter weeks calling (but calls were expensive and limited). Each letter was a jewel, each call another maddening step towards a deeper intimacy.
In the old days (the 1980s) when you needed a filing for a public company you had to call a company called Disclosure, which would messenger the document over. Our contact person at Disclosure was a woman named Claire and she had the best telephone voice. I still remember it. It was melodic and friendly and made you think you were talking to someone thoroughly beautiful in every way.
